Yeah, we know this is a journal about design, but sometimes the round the table wisdom is just too good not to share. Here's a little palette cleanser for your heart and mind as we approach the half-way point of summer. Every once in while, a piece of advice (whether solicited or not) comes across your path and it hits home. Reading the blog, CUP OF JO, the advice to “‘Don’t bite the hook,’” was such a great reminder to pause and realize that not everything warrants an equal and opposite reaction. As she explains, “Someone may toss the hook in your direction — and lash it around — but you don’t have to bite it and lash around, too.” Someone may just need a little grace or a little understanding. With summer in full swing and a house full of teenagers, I find myself heeding this advice and not always having a reaction to a quip, complaint or frustration. I can’t say it makes everyday more peaceful, but it does help to pick my battles.
Beyond the advice from Cup of Jo, here are a few other sentiments that we came across recently that stuck a cord:
I highly recommend any of Yung Pueblo’s books - this advice always makes me think about priorities.
Bryn likes this advice and believes there is always a way to have a difficult conversation without being difficult.
This advice always reminds Kim of her kids - where it is as much what you say as how you say it. She knows they won’t remember everything she says (or any of it!), but they will remember feeling loved.
