So often the primary bedroom is neglected as funds and energy are directed to designing more public spaces in a home. While also embarking upon refreshing his living spaces, our client was ready to finally take his sleeping quarters to the next level. Sophisticated, masculine, comfortable and refined were our working brief and to that end two potential design plans emerged.
One design plan leaned heavily on a custom designed bed wall with built-ins and a feature headboard, while the other was rich in dark tones and textures for a cozy, elegant vibe. At the end of the day, the client preferred the latter scheme, but we all felt the star moment was missing. Enter an Iksel mural via Schumacher and everything clicked.
Dramatic and yet subtle in its tonality, the mural opens up vistas and scenes in the room and creates a feeling of both envelopment and movement. With the star moment in place, it was time to layer in texture and warmth. A mix of rich velvets and tweeds layered over a traditional rug in black, gold and ochre are the perfect mix of formality and comfort. Meanwhile, pops of rust in cut velvets and caramel-colored leather bring energy. Greek key trimmed drapery and tonal woven grass cloth shades blend nicely with the mural and allow lots of options for light filtering, privacy and black-out for the coveted sleep-in.
The lighting in the space is layered - glazed ceramic sconces for bedtime reading and an alabaster dresser lamp pair nicely with the soft, pleated overhead fixture that reflects the grass-cloth ceiling treatment. Cozy armchairs and a gorgeous leather ottoman mean relaxing in this room can take place at all hours of day. The vintage nightstands add an element of traditional while the artisan and vintage accessories and custom bedding layer in for a collected, sophisticated feeling. The overall effect is a tad English, a bit Park Avenue and a touch world-traveler.
