This dream project began with a long-standing relationship between our clients and introducing them to one of our favorite construction teams - and then convincing everyone we could make this new home nestled into the dunes of Lake Michigan a reality! The homeowners have long been a part of this special community in Lake Country, raising their boys with summers at the beach in a sweet but small and worn out cottage. Enter the legacy lake house dream, a pending empty nest and the rebuild project was born.
Part of the kitsch of the beach house is just that - the kitsch! At the same time, our clients desired something lasting and sophisticated - beachy and casual, hard working, livable and beautiful. To that end, we went quite literal with some elements - including; boat inspired ships' ladders, cabled railings, rope light fixtures and loads of blues in finishes and textiles. Luckily, this family has a long history of folks on the water and had some great memorabilia to showcase-- from an amazing trophy-mounted Marlin caught by the homeowner's mother (what a feat!!), and countless family art pieces reflecting their love of the water, sailing and the area. A particularly special sentimental element was framing the lovingly worn and tattered sailing flags from a family sailboat and sailing business.
The tone for the home was introduced on entry with a water blue ombre mural that was a starting point for the home's design. We kept the permanent finishes light, airy and nautically inspired - rarely veering from the blue, white and aquamarine palette. Beachy light wood floors and cabinetry along with vertical shiplap and dune-colored natural stone feel warm and expected - in the best way. Special details like the custom staircase details and lofted captains nook create moments of delight as you travel through the home. Of course, everything is made for beach living - durable, easy to clean and ready for the current and future generations to fully embrace the legacy of lake life.
