Mood Boards: When Inspiration Becomes A Plan

Every home, room or space starts with a jumping off point. Some call it a concept, some call it a design scheme, some call it the inspiration. This jumping off point for a room can come from anywhere - a beautiful beach scene, a walk in the woods, an inspired cocktail, a well plated meal, a vintage find - you name it and it can inspire a space. Often times, we start by taking that inspiration and turning it into a mood board. This translates colors, textures and tones into tangible design elements. Here we’ll answer some common questions about mood boards.

Why do we put together mood boards?

Mood boards help us see the vision for an entire space.  Instead of picking out one piece at a time, the mood board is a chance to see how all the elements in a space can work together cohesively to make sure we have the right balance.  They help us see where a design concept could go and can also help point out what, if anything, is missing.

What makes a mood board helpful?

Think of a mood board as snapshot of the feeling of the space. Does the mix of elements showcase the desired sentiment of the room? Is it playful or calm? Bold or serene? Sophisticated or whimsical? Classic or contemporary? Monochromatic or colorful? Every specific element in the mood board may not end up in the room.  But, that overall feeling is one to come back to as we make sure the design is staying on track.

What comes after the mood board?

Well, after the jumping off point, we jump.  When a mood board feels right, the next step is to bring that feeling to life with the right amount of each element.  Just like when you cook, the right amount of each ingredient matters.  Too much salt can ruin a dish.  Too much of any one design element can tip the balance of a room.  When the hard lines are balanced with soft touches and the small scale patterns are balanced with large scale patterns and solids, the feeling from the mood board can start to take shape.

What if I don’t have something to inspire a mood board?

Browsing existing mood boards can also be a way to narrow down the feeling you’re hoping for in a room. While spending gobs of time on Pinterest looking at rooms that may not relate to your space is one way to do it, looking through mood boards that could be applied to any space can make it easier to find a feeling for your space.  We have an ever growing library of mood boards that you’re welcome to browse for inspiration.
