As we inch closer to spring time, we often get the inkling to mix up our decor to reflect the new feeling of the season. Whether it is a cozy winter vibe, a fresh spring feeling, an airy summer atmosphere or an earthy fall scene, changing up a few items in our homes keeps them feeling fresh and celebrates the time of year. When making seasonal updates, there are a few simple swaps that we always go back to. Here are our tried and true ways to add seasonal touches:
1. Forage Your Yard - Take a walk around your property and see what mother nature is giving you - pretty fall leaves, evergreen branches, or spring and summer blooms? Bring your garden sheers and prune off a few pieces that you can add to a statement vase, a mantle display or even a smaller vase on a bookshelf.
2. Rotate Your Wood Tones - Take a look at your baskets and picture frames. Can you rotate the ones that are most visible? Lighter wood tones or woven textures such as sea grass lean towards spring and summer, while richer browns like walnut evoke fall and winter vibes.
3. Change up the Palette of a Few Decor Items - Without having to totally reboot all your pieces, swapping in a few key pieces can set a new mood to match the new season. Lighter and cooler colors tend to the spring and summer months while darker jewel tones bring a cozy vibe for fall and winter. For instance, simply swapping out a few pillow covers (you can reuse the same inserts) or throws can change the feeling of a family or living room room. Or, switching the books on display shelves to the books with spine colors of the season can make a difference.
Swapping out the yellow striped pillows for the rich blue pillows makes a huge difference in this family room. The navy and green set the stage for this family’s holiday decor. And, by just changing out the pillow covers, there is less to store.
4. Shop Smart - Start by shopping your own home. By looking at what you already have, you may be surprised to find items you can incorporate into more visible areas. Chances are you can repurpose a vase, rotate a throw blanket to the arm of a sofa or add a ribbon to an old favorite item. Vintage stores are always full of great items that can bring a lightness and brightness for spring and summer or a cozy and rich feeling for fall and winter. Not that we need another reason to go vintage shopping, but it is always fun to see what we’ll find. And, don’t forget what a fresh bouquet of flowers can add to a space. (We love Trader Joe’s for these!)
