Mixing New and Existing Design Elements in a Traditionally Layered Townhome

The task of creating an updated and interesting design plan when working with existing pieces and an already established palette can be a bit tricky.  Our client had a good foundation of quality furniture and hoped to finish up some rooms, introduce a few completely new pieces and showcase some fabulous new art.

The dining and living rooms are connected spaces - we started with putting together a new dining set grounded with a gorgeous scallop-based pedestal table with brass inlay, paired with a custom banquette in rust velvet and creamy leather chairs.  A new chandelier floats above and a photograph by Gray Malin draws the eye with its large horizon.  The slate blue rug with leather binding is a quiet layer that flows well with the existing palette of window treatments and paint.

While a new sofa was not originally in the plan, our client feel in love with both the look and sit of the curved back on display at the Mart - it’s sexy but understated and brings a formality to the room while still being super comfortable and great for lounging.  The neutral mohair fabric is lovely to touch and adds a layer of texture.  A stunning work by Hunt Slonem is the real star of the show with its iridescent gold background - it’s warm and dramatic and sits beautifully against a textured grasscloth wallpaper.  A new lounge chair creates a cozy corner for sitting and a collection of new custom pillows finish off this update for a polished and pretty room.

The upstairs loft area already boasted a set of custom blue built-ins and woven wood wallpaper, but lacked furniture  - the goal was to create a casual sitting area for our client to relax.

A traditional Persian rug in bold reds, oranges and blues grounds the seating area and introduces an energized palette to the existing navy built-ins.  We reinvented the existing sofa from the living room with a saturated blue tweed and paired it with a leather chair and burl wood coffee table for a modern moment.  A vintage traditional desk chair got a cheeky lime velvet to keep the vibe  from getting too serious and a mix of vintage and antique accessories pop off the navy bookcases.  We created a moment at the top of the stair landing with custom stools and lamp shades in a favorite linen fabric that is playful and over the top with color - a painted vintage mirror finishes off this happy vignette.

These three spaces are now finished and ready for enjoying - using a mix of new, custom and repurposed pieces with a layer of vintage and antique accessories.
