This unique home is really all about the setting - nestled into the edge of the forest preserve, it has forested views and privacy at nearly every window. We were visited by deer many times during the renovation process and it was a spectacular process to watch the transformation of this special property.
Truth be told, I have been walking by this house with my doggie for years and admiring its location and contemporary bones. I’ve even debated dropping a note in the mailbox asking for a chance to purchase this lovely home — but alas my procrastination meant the home was snatched up without barely hitting the market. The good news is the right folks, returning from Los Angeles to their midwestern roots in Glen Ellyn, are now the owners of this special property and pinch me - we were lucky enough to participate in the renovation.
At its heart of hearts, this home wants to be a groovy 70’s babe - grounded, simple but interesting. Updating the home for modern life and infusing a bit of contemporary styling in finishes was high on our clients’ wish list — the aim was to bring a bit of California modern to this gem.
There were a few changes to the layout that netted the clients a walk-in closet and three en-suite baths plus a powder room. Tweaking the primary suite allowed for a spacious steam shower and soaking tub. Opening up the kitchen and dining room and expanding the opening from those spaces into the family room allowed for site lines and natural light to move through the home. We used natural walnut throughout the home for the bulk of cabinetry - a design choice that continues the ground the home in warm, organic materials while the simple, artisan tile choices feel distinctly mid-century.
Special selections of natural stone are highlighted on the kitchen island, custom powder room sink and basement wet bar. The two fireplaces in the home were left in their original state - they are natural and stunning in their own right and needed little more than a clean-up to be perfect. Through the home, jib doors were employed for a contemporary element, and red oak paneling was used to bring interest to long runs of drywall.
All in all, the renovation of this Mid-Century home with a special vista now welcomes a midwestern family back from California while embracing its bones and preparing the home for many years to come.
