How a Neutral Space Can be Beautifully Layered

While I prefer to live with a fair amount of color and pattern in my own home, I can appreciate the beauty of a well-done neutral space. Beyond neutral walls with “pops” of color, a well-executed tonal space should have layers of subtle interest. To achieve that depth with a neutral color palette, we lean on layering a variety of elements in the space. When opting for a neutral space, pulling together the following components will help the space sing.

Fireplace living room
  • Tone-on-tone pattern and varied textures (stubby linens, soft velvets, tweeds, even grass cloths) are a quiet way to keep a neutral room from being one-note.

  • Art draws the eye and creates dimension and adds soul to a space that has less happening in other decorative elements.

  • Eclectic furniture styles helps create movement and energy - juxtaposing classical pieces with mid-century or modern elements lends a design narrative without introducing color.

  • Organic elements bring warmth to neutral spaces. Plants, driftwood, natural sculptures or even shadowboxed collections of shells are easy and beautiful ways to layer in interest.y.
