The 3rd floor of this home was a playroom that this sweet family’s kids had outgrown. It offered some extra storage space, but there wasn’t much else luring the family to venture up there often. The room wasn’t adding much to the family’s daily lives and they wanted to turn it into a fun hangout spot for their growing girls, and sweet pup, Bailey. When tweens have the choice of where to hang out, having a spot to invite friends, snuggle up for a movie or just retreat with a good book is golden.
Here is where we started:
We always begin with a solid space plan and design inspiration. For this space, the girls (and their parents) were looking for a place to lounge, read, hang out with friends, watch television, and of course, grab a snack.
For some teen appeal and utilizing this unique space, the space plan included a day bed with built-in storage, a custom TV console, cozy hanging chair, and kitchenette (hello, convenient snacks!).
To bring some warmth and playfulness into the space, we dug into all the great wallpaper and textile options. This wallpaper from Anthropologie caught us immediately. And, with so many great retail pillow options from Anthro (again) and Target, as well as some custom pillows with fabrics from Maxwell, we rounded out an inviting and elevated boho vibe with a mix of custom and retail options.
We also wanted to amplify the architectural feature of the pitch of the ceiling and the light pouring in this oval window. Working with our construction partners, DeGroot Construction, this ceiling was accented with shiplap while the built-in storage and day bed was constructed.
Custom mattresses amp up the cozy factor and anchor all the fun patterns and colors in the pillows.
For just the right TV console, in just the right color, we drew up some plans. With a fantastic cabinets partner, we were able to deliver a custom piece that checked all the boxes.
Lastly, we couldn’t forget the snacks! With a dry bar at the ready (custom designed again with our cabinet partners), these tweens were pleased as punch with their new ultimate hangout spot.
